Holly Bolton (www.imdb.com): Internet Movie Database Inc. gives information on movies from the past and present as well as movies currently in production. The site also provides news on celebrities and television. In addition, movie times from theaters are accessible. |
• The navigation bar on the left side has many choices so even if
you do not see what you want, you will know if you should click on the
“more” icon if what you need is similar to the listed choices.
• The three colors: beige, blue, and white, do not distract from the content. • The “Go” buttons are clearly clickable. • The “Free Trial” button is a good use of color contrast to draw attention to an object without making it blaring or obnoxious. |
• The drop down search menu makes the user think. •Choices within the menu are vague, such as “All (old).” • “Movie/TV Quote of the Day,” “Truly Trivial,” “Today's IMDb Poll...” and “Daily Trivia” are sporadically placed within the page, creating discontinuity. • There is too much text under the “movie of the day” column. • The picture of a movie, a poster and the link with name of the same movie lead to different addresses. • “Find the trailers for the hot, upcoming theatrical releases and TV premieres here:” is redundant because the material beneath it clearly links to trailers. • The “Happy Birthday” section on the right says “cool feature” in very small font and it is not clear if it is clickable. |
The underlined blue text in lists and within other text is redundant.
Shorter lists and possibly using another color, such as black, in some cases would put less emphasis on the large amount of underlined text. The navigation bar on the left, while helpful, should have less items in each list. Because most users do not scroll beyond the first frame, this would create easier navigation. Consolidate the trivia and poll section into a box on the right or put together at the bottom of the body to unify the features. The search menu should be all encompassing and self-sorting, rather than having a drop down category selection. Less text under the explanation of movies would be cleaner. Overall, this page contains a lot of well-organized information. In some cases, as noted above, fewer items will have the same impact and ease navigation. |
Meggie Conley (www.glastonburytor.org.uk): The purpose of this site is to inform people of the history, myths, and fascination of this not so normal hill, why it is one of the most prominent sacred sites, and why it attracts thousands of people each year. It explains folklore and magic, the goddess of Glastonbury, and the connection with the mystical Isle of Avalon. This site provides pictures and maps of ancient sites that have been said to have connection with the Glastonbury Tor. Places from the Arthurian times such as Camelot and Avalon, and the lost city of Atlantis. It attempts to give us a better understanding of why this historical hill is said to hold so much power and magic, and why it effects so many of its visitors. |
• An introduction to the Glastonbury Tor • Explanations about its history, folklore, and magic • A picture library • The myth of the Tor goddess • Alignments and ancient sites connected with the Tor • Recommended books of the history, myths, and legends • Other websites • Credits • Frequent updates |
• Not enough information concerning the Isle of Avalon • Could use more historical evidence and ideas about the Tor • Information on visiting the Glastonbury Tor • Glastonbury today • Tor Tours • Best times to visit |
For the most part I really enjoy this site. It is very informative and has answered a lot of questions I have had about the mysteries of the Glastonbury Tor, and particularly its connection with Arthurian times and Avalon. What I would like to read more of on this site would be personal stories that people have shared about their experiences while visiting the Tor, and when the best time to visit Glastonbury would be. The Glastonbury Tor has always been a fascination of mine along with the legends of King Arthur. I would like to see this site add more about the Arthurian times and the connection they have with the Isle of Avalon, since this site refers to the Tor as having once been, or been apart of Avalon |
Michelle Girard (www.rit.edu): the website for the Rochester Institute for Technology. | It is well organized. Visually it is appealing, with a nice color scheme and few pictures. It isn't cluttered with to many links or pictures. It is a simple site in the fact that it is easy to find information, because it is set up logically.
Johanna Gorton (www.thehungersite.com): This site gets sponsors from online businesses that will donate a specific amount of money to The Hunger Site for each person that "donates" food to the cause. It also provides facts about hunger in the world, and other things that people can do to help. |
Easy to navigate Self-evident Button is obvious It is clear what is the index It does not take too long to load, despite the number of graphics |
Images add to the time it takes to load the page There are 5 items in the index that indicate things for sale |
This site could use fewer pictures, which seem to be only filling up space on the right side of the page. They could also combine the 5 different titles (Our Store, New Arrivals, Sale, Gifts, and Wreaths) into "Our Store", and then divide them on the store page. Also, they should move the information about the site, that is currently located on the bottom, to beneath the "Give Free Food" button so that visitors can read about it before they decide to click. |
Tiava Grant (.advil.com/): The purpose
of this site is to educate the consumers about the product. I noticed that the strength of the site outweighed the weaknesses. |
The site offers consumers who provided their email addresses coupons off
their products. The site also has really good graphics which did not take long to load. Each product has a detailed summary of it's uses. Site provided location where products can be found. Site also had a section for frequently asked questions. Site informed parents about cold and medicine for children products Most of all the site was easy to access and did not take long to load. |
The font for options needs to be larger The section for healthcare professionals should be accessible for everyone. |
I think this is a well informed site, I only wish that it had pictures of minorities and not just White families. I also would like to be able to access the Healthcare Professionals section without having to download the software. |
Yan Li (www.barthphoto.com/clubs.htm): To share photos with readers, to do business and to make money. | 1. It is clear what kind of pictures are on the site. 2. Each category introduces every picture with names and places. 3. The pictures are from our life. They are not abstract. 4. It is readable. Readers will know what they can do because the site doesn’t have too much information. 5. The site has the photographer’s own style. This is very important. People don’t like all sites to look the same. |
1. The site is slow when you try to see pictures. 2. All the pictures are just one shape except those taken in clubs. 3. There are not many categories. 4. Readers won’t know whether they need to click the pictures or the categories to see more pictures. 5. The pictures cannot zoom in or zoom out. 6. The website hasn't been updated recently. 7. The pictures aren't dated. |
I think the site is pretty good because the designer has his own style. Not too many websites have their own styles. |
Jenna Martines (www.Gapkids.com): The purpose of the site is to advertise and present information on clothing for children from the size to the color of an item. There are separate links for adults and babies. The site provides information on pants, shirts, dresses underwear and much more. The site informs but also provides you with the opportunity to shop via the web. |
The color is bright and gets your attention The clothes are broken down into categories. The prices are located on the website. The sizes are available to select. There are pictures that show how the item looks. There is also a customer contact information and store locator option. |
The font is too small. The important information is not as visual as are the images or graphics The site is slow on loading the images. |
The site is well done it is informative as far as the information a shopper needs when purchasing an item. The information is descriptive and the images of the children are eye catching. |
Natialie Massulik (www.thewb.com/Shows/Show/0,7353,||139,00.html): This site's purpose is to give the viewers of The WB's TV show
"Angel" information about the actors and actresses in the show,
and also to give some backstory about the show to new viewers. It also
contains a posting board where the audience can post their feedback about
the show. There is also a preview option, where you can get a preview
of an upcoming episode. |
1) Clear links to each actor's page, with their pictures beside it. 2) Option to link to any previous episode description instantly. (choose episode bar) 3) Offers links to any other WB show. 4) It has a search option for the site. 5) There are pictures and icons you can download for free. |
1) It took a long time for it to load unto my computer. 2) There are ad's for other WB shows that I didn't want info on. 3) I think the backstory on the show was a little bit lengthy, and might be condensed. 4) The site looks a bit cluttered. 5) It's not very visually pleasing, sort of harsh Black and White page with a few pictures. 6) The Url is not easy to remember. |
This is a good
site for people who rarely watch "Angel" and want to get backstory
on the television show. However, for an avid viewer the only very helpful
or interesting points about this site are the previews they give you,
and the option to post your opinions. If it were my site, I think I would try to make it look less cluttered, and perhaps try some fancy graphics. I would also only devote it to the show in question, with not quite so much a focus on advertising for other shows. |
Caitlin McNulty (www.dictionary.reference.com): Reference material. Look up definitions to words, or synonyms with the thesaurus. | The word search is at the top of the page and noticeable | I am not sure what all the links on the bottom of the page are for.
Are they part of this site or others? There is an advertisement in the
middle of the page. |
Put the ad somewhere else, and maybe make the bottom half of the page
a little clearer. |
Anna Radlowski (www.johnsrealmonline.com/classicnick): To provide information on shows that aired on Nickelodeon from its beginnings through the 1980s. | Strengths: (1) Side toolbar of links very clear & easy to use (2) Links are simple - if I want to go to “Bananaman” I can easily find the link & where to go (3) Links change color after being visited, so I know what I have seen. (4) All of the pages are arranged in a similar fashion, making it easy to find things. (5) An image or different colored text shows what has been updated recently. |
1) Had to ask myself, “Self, is this a link?” about a graphic (2) Very wordy. (3) The “contact me” link was hard to find, all the way on the bottom of the page. (4) The bottom of the page is just a hodge podge of icons and links, and I’m not quite sure where all of them lead or of their purpose. (5) There is a search bar located way at the bottom betwixt the hodge podge of icons. I’m not really sure what its purpose is. (6) The Vote Page is confusing - when were the votes taken? Why do I have to scroll down to find it? How are they organized? etc. |
The page is, for the most part, clear, but it can sometimes be confusing,
especially with the clutter on the bottom. Also, I had to click to a FAQ
page to discover the site’s purpose, rather than just find it on
the front page. I’d suggest making the icons smaller & giving
more of a purpose to the search bar by putting it on the top of the toolbar
on the left hand side. Also, the “Classic Nick Homepage” title
in blue with a marble background doesn’t seem to flow with the rest
of the page, and I had to think if maybe I wasn’t getting the background
image for the rest of the page. Maybe just have the text without the marble
background, and center it on the page. |
Samantha Ruggles (feminist.com): I choose feminist.com for a couple of reasons, one I am attempting to minor in women studies (which has strong times to feminist theory and feminism in action) two, because I like to be socially conscious and as a women I feel that the struggle for women rights, positive women recognition, and women ideas in general are important and far too under represented. Before this assignment I had never been to feminist.com, so having had this be my first encounter with the site I found it easier for me to critique. | The first thing I noticed was that I greatly enjoy the back round purple
color, its my favorite color, not to mention generally aesthetically pleasing.
When having a web-site, whether it be to educate a specific target audience or to show a personal piece of ones life, no matter what the purpose is, the site must be visually pleasing in order to keep your viewers attention. In today's rapidly advancing society the dominant form of relaying information is no longer writing in a manuscript, its visuals. Furthermore, since technology is quickly becoming more efficient web site viewers are losing their patience and expect if not down right demand a web site to load quickly. A positive to this site was that it didn't take for ever to load. Once I took my eyes off of the pretty background I realized that I was overwhelmed with information. Though the site is well organized, it's a bit cluttered, the viewer feels bombarded with information, there is a million links. If the viewer has already visited the site and knows exactly what section they are interested then the site would be less intimidating. Another good thing about feminist.com is that everything is clearly labeled, has a direct link, color coded and is written in direct simple language. As an activist organization a beneficial link that the site has is, contact information as well as a link on up coming events and how to get involved. A few suggestions I have for the site are first, to have more pictures, call me from the 20th century generation, but pictures and visual representation are important, and second, to not have so many links, they all make me want to scream and quickly leave the site. |
Over all I enjoyed feminist.com and will be using it time and time again in the future to get informative updates on the what is happening with the feminist fight.
Rebecca Simkins (www.nyt.com):This is the webpage of the newspaper the New York Times. | Clear cut. Graphics are simple and load quickly. Page loads quickly overall. Contains comprehensive news in sharply defined sections and lists. Advertisements are small and out of the way. |
The print on this website is occasionally a bit small to read. | This is one of my favorite websites because I rely on it to access the news/articles in the New York Times daily. It is a simple but very pleasant and useful site. If I were the webmaster, I might make the fonts a bit larger for those who have difficulty reading small type. Overall, it is a very good site. |
Ranya Youssef (www.wells.edu/): The sites purpose is to allow people to learn about Wells College. | Offers a lot of contact information on every page Has the dates when the webpage was last updated for every link Everything is almost always a click away |
The webpage does not readjust to the whole size of the screen There is no date to show when the page was last updated Some of the links are not in button form so one has to think about if there is a link or a millisecond Some links just refresh the page or open a new webpage of the same screen |
Improvement: Keep pictures updated, so that they are inaccurate by at most a year. Label the Wells emblems a back to home bottom Remove all arbitrary links One should not be able to send the picture on the front of the website through e-mail |
